ASCOMOID

I was challenged to come up with the concept and sculpt for one of the early D&D creatures.

The Ascomoid, as we know it, was just a floaty sphere with gas holes… thats it… not that interesting.
From that starting point I come up with something more bulbous and primal, almost like a fleshy textured floating unicellular looking thing.

Personally, part of fun of producing concept art is imagining how a new creature will live its life, what eats/hunts and its life cycle… a bit of Darwinism is totally my cup of tea.
I sculpted 2 different evolutionary stages of the Ascomoid, one sill fruiting with a stalk and a fully matured adult.

And the fully matured one.
