Scratch build 25mm Space deck bases

Got some time past bank holidays and decided to clean 20x Poxwalkers minis and in the process got carried away with some 25mm bases for them.

I continued with a techno spacehulkish theme. I just used a few leftovers bits that I had around and greenstuff. Most important thing I wanted with these small bases is that they layed out mostly flat even if detailed.

This is what I have come up with.

Spaceship deck bases

First batch of bases ready to take some minis.
I got carried away with the volumes but I have not painted in a long time so I took the time to enjoy and get back into it.

Picked some warm colours so that they have a good contrast with the grey blue miniatures I have in mind. Feels good to paint some things again!

Scratch-built Spaceship deck bases

New year, new army is pretty much the curse of any tabletop gamer or miniature collector.
Got some new projects to develop this year and started planing and preparing some bases to go with them.
The most difficult part of basing is figuring out the theme that you want to go with and stick to it. After much back and forth I went with Spaceship deck bases in warm colours to contrast with the minis.

Used loads of bits and kits that I had on my bits box and some greenstuff and did these.

Ready to paint.

The bases are pretty much as flat as they can get so that I can stick any figure with little hassle. I will build the volumes with colour gradients.

First batch done.

Its been a while since I did things just for myself but this year one of the main goals is to balance a bit better the commission work vs hobby work.
Wish me luck

Rock giant based for Age of Sigmar

Just a quick one, I gave my rock giant a round base so that he can start fighting alongside my Gobbos.

The Arachnarok is back

Age of Sigmar is going stronger and stronger a bit all over the place, so its time to bring some of my big boys to this new age.

Previously my Arachnarok was set on a rectangular base and with no riders, so now for AoS I introduced some jazz. Still not a fan of loads of gobbos on top of it so I went with just one Shaman. The base now is also a huge circular and in my opinion it complements the spider a lot better.

Another rebased figure and Im getting closer to finish up all this rebasing and  changing things on my old army.

Giant rebased for AoS

Hi all and Happy Easter!

Finally got some time off so I rebased my giant. Its slowly getting there... all these new bases do take time to get them right.

Age of Sigmar rebasing Savage orcs

Howdy folks,

Time to revisit some rebasing for AoS. I decided to give it a go with my savage orcs. Previously they were just part of a big unit for WFB but now they will be split in two units of 16 and each one with the big stabba.
These fellas will be the 2 ccw variants but the following unit will have spear and shield.

I rather prefer the look of these on circular bases since you can see the individual conversions much better now.

TUTORIAL ( How to make long tufts )

Long tufts can be challenging to do and time consuming if you need to do plenty of them. I have created a little assembly line for my tufts since I need lots of them for my upcoming terrain pieces. This process did speed up things and now I can do 100 or more a day, easy.

The main problem with long tufts is keeping them in place (standing up) while they dry... With a bit of paper you can do the following structure.

1 - Perforated paper with some folds so that the holes are away from the ground.
2 - Non adherent paper, this is where the glue goes
3 - Paper frame duck-taped to a movable surface since you want your little tuft factory mobile

I choose a big distance from the ground because I need big and medium tall tufts.

I created two assembly lines so that I can clear more units per day.

I use cheap PVA glue and some tall grass from any company really.

Lay down some glue blobs on the non adherent paper.

Grab the tall grass and make sure both extremities are secure. If you don't you will have loads of grass bits flying around everywhere.

Insert tuft trough the hole and let it stick to the glue beneath it.

Make sure you do different lengths and volumes so that you can have more options when flocking your terrain.

Once PVA is dried you lift the punched paper to reveal the results.

Thats it tuft done!

If some of them have to much glue on the base you make sure you cut off the extra.

Lots of different sizes and shapes.

I keep them in a bag and the leftovers I also keep them in a bag so I can use them later on as scatter flock.

You can do plenty of tufts very fast this way.

Age of SIgmar rebasing the black orcs

Hi all, I have been rebasing my armies to round bases so that they are ready for Age of Sigmar.
The task is not easy if you have lots of models but the end results are well worth it.
Rules wise we can use any base but the square bases look visually out of place in a skirmish game, also its quite obvious the new GW direction, its clearly round bases all the way.

This time its my unit of Black Orcs that got the new bases and I used the new 32mm since these models are very bulky. Previously I had one unit of 25 Black Orcs but Im going to split them in 3 smaller ones for AOS. So far I have 2x10 Orcs with full command and one smaller 5 Orc unit that I will expand with extra minis so its the 3rd unit of 10 strong Orcs.

With 3 units of Black Orcs I will only need a Giant and a Black Orc Big Boss so that the IRONJAWS BIG MOB is finished.

Some photos.

I still need to find a way to differentiate these units on the battlefield because once they are all bundled together dishing some pain on the puny Sigmarites they will be hard to distinguish between themselves... Since the theme is Scorpions maybe they will be painted with some different details... like Black scorpion unit, red scorpion and white scorpions. I need to think about that once I crack some colours into these. For now these are based on the new wonderful 32mm's and they look a lot nicer.

Age of Sigmar rebasing or not?

After many months reading all the rumours about the major changes to Warhammer Fantasy Battles I finally got to the point that a decision needed to be made.

I have lots of WFB miniatures set in square bases and arranged in regiments but Age of Sigmar (AoS) introduced a new direction for my armies. Now the regiment formations are no more and the bases switched to circular. Humm not happy with that  for several reasons:

1- Rebasing finished modeling projects is not what I would call fun time.
2-  If I break the regiment formation and go circular bases for my miniatures they will no longer be compatible with previous editions of WFB or other companies emergent games.
3- It costs money to rebase hundreds of miniatures

So yes, I was inclined to leave them all in square bases and get on with it... well that was before I set some miniatures on the table in a skirmish arrangement.

Ouch that looks wrong in so many ways, its just a visual mess.
I got myself some 25mm circular bases to see the total footprint of my goblin archers regiment.

Its going to take more space on the table thats for sure.
When I dispersed my regiment I noticed that the unit fillers that I used would take the space of 10 models so effectively my 50 gobbo regiment was actually just 40 gobbos, a troll and some beetles.
Thing is, in AoS makes no sense to have these unit fillers. The nature of the skirmish game renders these fillers redundant. So I dropped them.

By now I only  have 40 goblin archers, no cool fillers and some horrible pointy square bases in loose formation... Not a good starting point. What to do? Call it a day and do the clever thing and dont change a thing, thats what I should have done. But I didn't, I had the urge to rebase it all and so I got my heavy tools and butchered some squares, here is the results.

Since this is skirmish now I broke the unit in 2 smaller and more manageable detachments, luckily enough I had both old school and new models mixed into the archers so the obvious choice for clarity sake on the table was to divide them by edition.

One unit of the old farts ( they also gained an extra standard and musician):

and one unit of the new gobbos.

So the impulsive blind decision prevailed in the end and I will go AoS all the way, in the process I will rebase my armies. Lost my fillers but gained 1 extra unit with standard and musician.
They do look nice in little circles.
